Today: SEA Prospect Joshua Fields
Josh Fields is a right-handed pitcher, the 2007 first round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners, is a near-to-MLB caliber college pitcher who dominated while at the University of Georgia. Fields is the third consecutive pitcher taken by the Mariners in the first round (Brandon Morrow, Phillippe Aumont) Fields's nearness to MLB made him a high-value pick for Seattle.
Fields was the Southeastern Conference pitcher of the year last season, with a 2-2 record, 16 saves and a 2.27 earned-run average. He limited opponents to a .112 batting average in 30 relief appearances this season. He struck out 56 and walked only 18.
Fields works with a mid-nineties fastball that's been clocked as high as 98mph. His best second pitch is a power curve, a true plus pitch that makes opposing batters flail at air. He's shown the aggressive but resilient mentality teams like to see in a closer.
On a rebuilding team, he makes an intriguing low-cost option at closer, especially considering how many building blocks a veteran like J.J. Putz could produce for the Mariners.
