Today: COL Prospect Casey Weathers
Casey Weathers is a right-handed, flamethrowing Rockies prospect who has more talent than opportunity in Colorado. One of at least four young hot relief prospects in the Rockies system, Weathers was drafted in the first round of 2007 out of Vanderbilt University, where he was an All American pitcher with a dazzling 92:26 strikeout to walk ratio.
After being signed by Colorado and sent to Sally League Asheville, Weathers put up good numbers for a fresh-faced college player, striking out 21 while walking nine, and posting a 3.95 ERA.

Weathers works with a frighteningly-hot fastball, touching 98 with late movement. His overhand pitching motion makes the most of this movement, producing a downward plane despite his smallish (6-1) stature. His secondary pitch is a low-90's slider that's also a plus pitch.
Weathers has the personality and self-assurance to be a closer, though he's blocked in Colorado by at least three other qualified ninth-inning men. Still, things change quickly in the modern baseball business, so it's possible one or two of those obstacles could be removed by the time Casey's ready for the big leagues.
Expect Weathers to get a look-see in Colorado late this season, as the Rockies evaluate their assets heading into 2009.
